Picasa Web Albums Uploaders

How can I upload photos to Picasa Web Albums using a Mac?

Google provides two products for getting your photos into Picasa Web Albums:

* Picasa Web Albums Exporter for iPhoto, an iPhoto plug-in that lets you upload your photos directly from iPhoto. If you use iPhoto for managing your photos, this is all you'll need to get your photos to Picasa Web Albums.
* Picasa Web Albums Uploader, a separate application for uploading photos. If you don't use iPhoto, or you prefer to use a separate program for uploading, this one is for you.

Do I need one of these programs in order to upload photos?

No. You can upload photos with your web browser, but if you have many photos to upload, it's not the best choice, because you have to choose and upload one at a time. So, you can use your browser in a pinch, and the Uploader or Exporter when you have a lot to upload.

What software am I getting when I download this?

The download includes both the Exporter and the Uploader. Feel free to try out both of them, although you'll probably find that one or the other is right for most of your work.

What is Picasa Web Albums Exporter for iPhoto?

Picasa Web Albums Exporter lives right inside iPhoto, in the File menu (iPhoto 6 and iPhoto 4) or the Share menu (iPhoto 5). Exporter is a plug-in, rather than a separate application. Using Exporter, you can

* Fill your Picasa Web Albums with photos.
* Create new albums and upload photos to them.
* See how much storage you have available for web albums.

What is Picasa Web Albums Uploader?

Picasa Web Albums Uploader is a separate application for uploading your photos. Because Uploader is a full application and has room to stretch out, it provides some features that Exporter doesn't have:

* Add photos (or folders of photos) that aren't in iPhoto.
* Add captions to your photos.
* Search your Mac for recently added photos.

How do I install this software?

To install Picasa Web Albums Exporter into iPhoto, first make sure iPhoto isn't open. Then, double-click Picasa Web Albums iPhoto plug-in.pkg from the disk image you downloaded. This will open the Installer. When the Installer finishes, you're ready to use the Exporter in iPhoto.

To install Picasa Web Albums Uploader, just drag it from the disk image you downloaded and drop it into the Applications folder.

What is autoupdate?

Picasa Web Albums Exporter and Uploader include an automatic update feature that checks for new versions once a week. When an update is available, you'll be asked if you want to install it.

If you want to check to see if an update is available -- just to be sure -- you can do so:

* in Exporter, click Check For Update in the lower right corner of the Export dialog.
* in Uploader, choose Check For Update in the Picasa Web Albums Updater menu.

To upload your photos from inside iPhoto, take the following steps:

2. Choose File > Export (or if you don't see Export in the File menu, choose Share > Export).
3. In the Export Photos dialog, click Picasa Web.

Do you have some cool tips I can use to improve my life and impress my friends?

* When you upload photos, you can speed your upload and save storage space by choosing Faster Upload from the Scale Large Photos pop-up menu.
* To upload an entire album at once, select the album in iPhoto's Source list at the left side of the window.
* If you tag your photos with comments or keywords, those will be uploaded to Picasa Web Albums along with the photos (of course!).

How do I uninstall?

We hope you love Picasa Web Albums Exporter for iPhoto, but we won't be mad if you want to uninstall it. Here's how:

* Quit iPhoto if it's open.
* In the Finder, open the Applications folder.
* Click iPhoto once to select it.
* Choose File > Get Info to open an Info window.
* Find the section of the Info window labeled Plug-ins. If necessary, click the little triangle for Plug-ins to see the list of items in that section.
* Scroll through the list until you find PicasaWebAlbums.iPhotoExporter. Click that entry to select it.
* Click Remove.
* In the scary alert box that appears, click Continue.

Picasa Web Albums Uploader (standalone)

How do I upload photos using Picasa Web Albums Uploader?

To upload your photos, do the following:

1. Open Picasa Web Albums Uploader (it's probably in the Applications folder, right where you put it).
2. When asked, sign in to Picasa Web Albums.
3. To upload to a new Picasa Web Album, click New Album and give it a name and description. To upload to an album you already have in Picasa Web Albums, click Existing Album and choose from the pop-up menu.
4. Find some photos to upload. You can click + on the screen (or choose File > Add Recent Photo) to have the Uploader search for you, or you can drag photos (or entire folders) to where it says Drag Photos Here. You can also drag your photos from iPhoto into the uploader.
5. Click Upload to send your photos to Picasa Web Albums.

What are the various upload options?

Choose Preferences from the Picasa Web Albums Uploader menu to select from your upload options: Better Quality, Faster Upload, or Actual Size. Here's some info on each of those options:

* Choose Actual Size if you want to upload your photos at full resolution, just as you shot them.
* Use the Faster Upload option if you want to save storage space or you want your photos to upload as quickly as possible, even at the cost of lowering the resolution a bit.
* Pick Better Quality to get a compromise between upload speed and resolution.

Are there features in the Uploader that aren't in the iPhoto Exporter?

Good question! Yes, there are a few:

* There's a place for you to enter captions that get uploaded with your pictures.
* You can find recent photos when you click the + on the screen.
* You can grab photos that aren't in iPhoto and drag them to the Uploader.

Can you tell me some cool tips to make me a power user?

Yes, we can.

* You can remove photos from the list by selecting them and clicking - (minus) on the screen, or pressing Delete.
* You can use all the typical techniques to select and deselect photos in the list, such as Shift-Click to extend the selection and Command-Click to do discontiguous selection. (Because we Mac fanatics on the Google Mac team insist on this level of detail.)
* Click the icon in the lower left to go directly to your Picasa Web Albums account on the web.
* Hover the mouse over a photo in the list to see the photo's name and the full path to that photo on your disk.
* Click Show Files to ask the Finder to show you the selected photos.

How do I uninstall?

Drag the application to the trash. That's it.
